Cameron Norrie secured the biggest success of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Even though he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory signifies Norrie's maiden success over a sitting world number one.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the latest English competitor in history to defeat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just tried to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant win of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the most confident player in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, positioned 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which was the top run of results in the Spanish star's early career.

Contest Overview

Alcaraz appeared to be progressing easily to a win in the beginning as he sailed past the initial stanza. Yet, Norrie gradually worked himself back into the game by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, grueling exchanges. His persistent shot tolerance and reliability slowly made an impact.

For much of the battle, the world number one served well but he struggled badly to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old looked particularly struggling executing his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the sport for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player presented his opponent very few errors, keeping up his reliability, athleticism and depth the entire contest while performing well on serve and selecting opportunities to force himself forward and attack well.

Professional Background

Following dealing for months due to a serious physical setback and difficulties with his form, the tennis professional slipped as low as 91st in the rankings this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros round of 16 subsequently, this triumph reinforces the 30-year-old's progress as he seeks to come back to the world's top twenty and further. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his remarkable success, is yet to master how to display his finest performance indoors.
