Discrimination Returning in British Politics, Making Citizens Very Scared, the Prime Minister Says

Historical racial prejudice is returning within UK politics, which leaves citizens deeply uneasy, the Prime Minister warned, cautioning how polarizing far-right politics was “tearing our country apart”.

Tackling Racist Rhetoric and Divisive Politics

In conversation to doctor and media figure Amir Khan, Starmer accused the Reform UK party of overseeing the revival of discriminatory and divisive politics “that frankly I thought we had dealt with decades ago”.

During the discussion, which aired on a popular morning program this week, Starmer provided a clear indication suggesting the limit on child benefits would be lifted in the budget later this month.

Promise to Combat Child Poverty

When questioned whether he planned to eliminate this restriction, as noted by advocacy groups is the biggest driver of poverty for children in the UK, the Prime Minister said: “Let me be perfectly clear I will strive to lower poverty rates for kids.”

He listed measures ministers have already introduced including no-cost school lunches, breakfast clubs, and childcare but added: “Further action is necessary, and I pledge and tell you I will personally focus to cutting childhood poverty.”

When pressed about if his remarks indicated he intended to remove the two-child limit, Starmer stated “I would not say we aim to lower child poverty unless I was certain that we will be taking various actions to achieve this”.

Strong Signals from Rachel Reeves

The Chancellor, gave an equally strong hint earlier this week when she told BBC Radio 5 Live how ultimately, a child should not be penalised if their parents are struggling financially”.

Ministers are getting ready to scrap the restriction fully, having originally looked at ways to taper it either for very large families or wealthier families. The Resolution Foundation has estimated this would cost roughly £3.5 billion by 2029-30.

Ideological Split and Country’s Revival

In the interview, Starmer explained the ideological split currently in Britain existed between the government’s vision for renewal versus “the toxic division of Reform” and others on the right that are “dividing the nation”.

“Certain language being used – discriminatory talk, divisive rhetoric – that frankly I thought was resolved long ago is coming back into politics and it makes people feel deeply afraid,” he stated.

“We must confront to that racism, that divisiveness, and we have to proudly say that British identity is to have concern for others, is to be reasonable, is to be tolerant and compassionate, and we’re proud of that.”

Echoing Concerns from Wes Streeting

The prime minister mirrored sentiments expressed by the Health Secretary, who cautioned earlier this month how a disturbing form of discrimination similar to the 1970s and 1980s had become alarmingly frequent once more and that healthcare workers were primary targets of this trend.

The health secretary said incidents of both verbal and physical attacks based on people’s skin colour now happened so often that it was now “tolerated to hold racist views”.

“We’ve got to call time on racism across the UK and we need to place that ugly racist sentiment that’s found expression in our country where it belongs and once again create a climate in this country where racism is unacceptable to hold racist views,” Streeting stated.

Defining Choice for the Public

The Prime Minister spoke during a major political gathering this autumn to draw clear divisions with his political opponents, stating that voters faced a “defining choice”.

The prime minister explained he was engaged in a struggle for the nation’s identity, and argued although the public had “reasonable” concerns about illegal migration, there was “a moral line” which some politicians had crossed.

Starmer pledged to confront anyone who argued that people who were not white did not belong and that families who had lived in Britain for years must be removed, stating those advocating these ideas were “an enemy of national renewal”.

“Encouraging racist violence and hostility, that goes beyond concern: it’s criminal. This party – this great party – is proud of our flags, yet if they are painted alongside graffiti, targeting a business owner to leave the country, that is not patriotism; that’s racism,” he informed activists.
