Finland Stuns Two-Time Defending Champions the United States in U20 World Championship Quarterfinal Round.

Arttu Välilä netted the winner at 2:11 of extra time as the Finnish squad pulled off a stunning four to three victory over the two-time defending champion United States on Friday night in the world junior hockey last eight.

"Got to give credit to the United States," remarked Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju. "That's a fantastic squad, loaded with great players and a well coached team. But I mentioned we wanted that payback from last year, and I think we kind of earned it tonight."

In the semifinal matches Sunday, the Finns will face Sweden, while Canada will play Czechia. Sweden beat Latvia 6-3, Team Canada had a first-period five-goal outburst in a 7-1 romp over Slovakia, and Czechia topped Switzerland by a 6-2 margin.

Michigan State’s Lee Ryker knotted the score for the United States with one minute and thirty-three seconds remaining in regulation and the University of Notre Dame goalie N. Kempf pulled for an additional skater.

Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen scored in a fifty-five-second burst in the third to hand their team a 2-1 advantage. Tuuva tied it at two-all with 7:17 to go, then assisted on his teammate's game-leading goal with six minutes and twenty-two seconds on the clock. J. Saarelainen also assisted on Tuuva’s goal.

The BU defenseman Cole Hutson had a goal and a helper for the United States after taking a shot in the head versus the Swiss and sitting out two games.

"In my opinion we executed well for a lot of the game," Hutson said. "But the small details that they got, many of their high-quality opportunities came from our errors."

His BU teammate C. Eiserman handed the U.S. a 2-1 lead on a power play with 9:45 remaining in the middle frame. He accepted a pass from his teammate and fooled Petteri Rimpinen with a quick shot from the right side.

In the first quarter-final, A. Frondell scored twice for Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman L. Sahlin Wallenius contributed a goal and two assists to aid the Swedes remain undefeated in their five outings.

Meanwhile, in Minneapolis Tomas Galvas, S. Drancak, Adam Jiricek, Petr Sikora, J. Klima and Jakub Fibigr provided the goals for the Czech team.

Relegation Match Result

Germany triumphed in the consolation match, defeating Denmark 8-4. M. Schams had two goals to ensure Germany retain its place next year in the top division. The Danish side was relegated to Division I-A.
