McLaren's Lando Norris Claims First Formula One Drivers' Crown in Yas Marina Despite Max Verstappen's Race Victory.

Through an exhibition of brave driving, the McLaren driver has won his maiden F1 world title by taking third place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was all that was required for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

The driver performed exactly what was required in an enormously high-pressure race at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a number of audacious overtakes, with impeccable execution from both himself and his McLaren squad.

By winning his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh British driver to achieve this. This ends the team's title wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning turnaround for the team, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The Story of the Teammates

For his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for a large part of the season, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the later races. A series of poor performances and mistakes, including a crash in Baku, were expensive. Nevertheless, he emerges having demonstrated he is also world champion material. To have been so competitive in only his third year in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen too had been exceptional to take the fight down to the last race. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the win, but having come back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he did not quite have enough to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points behind.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Precision

Norris closed out his success with ruthless precision to take the championship that had been within reach but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the previous two races. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant accomplishment for the driver in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during tough times, believing they would return to the top. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to persist with his goal, keeping his composure and belief during periods under the cosh. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at maximising the car's potential.

At the start, Verstappen held his first place through the first corner, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to claim second place.

It showed the McLarens were free to race, but put Norris under pressure from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in midfield traffic, but he overtook rivals within a lap and showed no signs of nerves in his driving.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to overtake two cars at once, climbing to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, leading to a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside line, nearly leaving the track.

The incident was investigated by the race officials, with a few nerve-wracking laps passing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move unimpeded was vital to his championship bid.

Contrasting Fortunes

As Norris was crowned the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with excitement but has yielded what was comfortably his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked weary in the final rounds and will aim to reset over the winter.
