New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
