The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, did not confirm this decision promptly following his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
