Reece Walsh Takes Center Stage as Ruthless The Kangaroos Sweep England Aside in Opening Ashes Match
The home side's offensive weaknesses were exposed and punished by a clinical Australia as the tourists secured a worryingly straightforward victory in the first match of the Ashes.
The England coach's team had talked at length about their motivation going into the first Ashes for 22 years, and they were definitely full of endeavour at Wembley. However, in the crucial moments, it was the reigning title holders who displayed more calmness in front of a record attendance for an series match in the United Kingdom of more than 60,000.
Outstanding Performance from Reece Walsh
Led by an outstanding display in offense and defense from club star Walsh, the Kangaroos were deserving and convincing winners in the opening Test of the three-game contest, meaning England must triumph at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium next weekend to keep alive their aspirations of a first Ashes win since 1970.
England will have to be much better with the possession if they are to accomplish that goal. On several instances in the first half, the home team found themselves in promising positions but they were failed to score for any points. That was in no small part thanks to Reece Walsh, who pulled off two superb interceptions.
Key Moments of the Game
The first came as Farnworth seemed certain to put Dom Young in for what would have been the opening try, then Walsh stopped Mikey Lewis as half-time neared. By then, the Kangaroos had taken the lead as Walsh himself completed a wonderful move.
Nathan Cleary converted before adding a two-pointer on the brink of the interval to open up a two-score advantage. It was a significant moment, as was the score for Angus Crichton shortly after the restart which made it 14-0 in favour of the Kangaroos. England now had to cross the line thrice and that seemed to halt their momentum.
Should there have been uncertainty about the victors, they were firmly put to bed with a quarter-hour to go. Cameron Munster’s half-break was backed up by Crichton, who broke through Welsby for the Kangaroos' third score.
That made it 20-0 and there was further humiliation in the closing stages as Reece Walsh completed another breathtaking attack, exploiting a weary and clearly exhausted English defensive line for his second try.
Match Result and Looking Ahead
By then, local supporters had begun to filter out and many did not see Daryl Clark’s consolation, which at least prevented England finishing scoreless. However, there are many issues for the coach to address going into what is now a do-or-die Test next Saturday.
