The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
