The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
