This Dominik Diamond Personal Gaming of the Year Awards for 2025
Alright, how did you experience this year in your family? Could it be described as entirely positive as one might claim on social media? Packed with academic success for the kids and elaborate themed fancy dress celebrations for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a swamp of disappointment with only occasional entertaining highlights? Is any of this actually real, or have we all become digitally altered synthetic personas with celebrity dental work?
I've assembled the family for a chat, ready or not, to debate the crucial thing in twelve months: which video games we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my definitive list."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. I respect that.
Title Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with far better healthcare than her big sister has in the real world.
Game the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to prepare him so he can mature and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the start. I wish I could deal with my demons so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it needed earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was the previous year's breakout game, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play at any hour. Add in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an absolute peak of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Title I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that verbatim, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I'm over it. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Toss-up between business deals that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the garden at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
